Built-in Find and Replace?

I have some scripts that I wrote a long time ago when I didn’t know much, and didn’t ever use Standard Additions. In these scripts I write some files. I did this using InDesign CS since it has a good AppleScript Reference and I was able to figure out how to do what I needed to do. Since then, I’ve learned how to to file I/O with Standard Additions, and wish to elimate using InDesign for this. I also did some Search and Replaces in InDesign. My question is if there is any way to do Find/Replace without using another application? I’d like to keep everything in AppleScript as much as possible. Does anyone know how to do this?
