Clean up desktop by kind

Hi! I am completely new to Automator, and semi-new to AppleScript. I want to create an Automator workflow that cleans up my desktop by kind (not by date, into folders, etc.) every time I put a file there. If that's not possible, which I think it is, then every hour or day would be nice. I'm stickler about my desktop being sorted by kind, though, so is there a way to do that or do I have to do it manually? Thanks!

Hi,

you could attach a folder action to the desktop folder, but for performance reasons it's not recommended to monitor the desktop folder via folder action.

An automator workflow can be scheduled by using the "Calendar Alarm" template and attaching it to a recurring event in iCal

Ok, but how? Again, I'm totally new to Automator and have never done a single workflow before. Should I do it manually? Thanks.

Re: Clean up desktop by kind

Of course this depends on the tasks you're going to accomplish.

Open Automator, choose the appropriate template and drag the actions you need into the action area on the right side.

Then save the workflow somewhere and attach it to an iCal event
