Anyone know if there’s maybe an Applescript (or other) way to automate the download of the free single of the week in the iTunes music store? I know I’ve missed some really good ones.

You could schedule a weekly iCal alarm to run this Widget, and then choose whether or not to download the tune when the Widget appears.
