I would try using URL Access Scripting Addition first (note: treat it as an application). It comes with your OS (8.5 >), courtesy of Apple. There are excellent and an easy to follow Help Viewer ‘AppleScript Guidebook Module’ for it downloadable from Apple’s AppleScript web site section. They show examples of exactly what it sounds like you want for downloading a directory.
