Identify a tab stop in InDesign

I am working on a script that will find text in a series of paragraphs from a certain term to a tab stop. I am at a loss how to determine if a character in a paragraph is a tab stop in InDesign CS4.

Returning a tab in a variable shows up as " ", so how do I identify it or call it out?

normally tab is character id 9
