idle timing and events: getting stuck

Hello… I posted this question in the AppleScript | OS X forum with 0 replies after several days. I was hoping it would catch someone’s eye here.

The gist of it is:

the purpose of this thread is to get some feedback and expert info from you all about how on idle handlers work. Specifically, if a long idle handler is being executed and an event occurs, then what happens to the progress of that idle? At what point does it return to the middle of the idle, where it was? Or does it? Similarly, if there is another handler being executed in a delay loop, would on idle ever get triggered? Would another user-generated event interrupt an idle or “wake up” a seemingly dead idle?

Thanks for the link. It’s got some good information but unfortunately nothing that helps me here, except this statement:

If the handler’s still doing something when it’s called again, the call simply goes unheeded.

As I state above, what I’m most interested in here is what happens when the idle gets interrupted by something else, and whether it gets called at all if another handler is busy at its designated time.
