Insert formatted text in a Pages document?

I want to switch from AppleWorks to Pages, but can’t find an equivalent to AppleWorks “insert file” command.

I’m trying to insert formatted text and images (from a closed Pages file) in a Pages document. Is that possible?

It turns out an rtf file (but not a Pages file) can be manually inserted in a Pages document using the Insert > Choose… menu item.

Any clue how to AppleScript this?
