Is it possible to modify the pagination in a PDF via script?

Hi everybody,

Very often a customer would ask us to modify the pagination of a document shortly before we have to deliver the PDF to the printing company. Then my colleagues have to open the original document (InDesign, QXP, RagTime, etc.), edit the pagination and then re-export it to PDF. With documents containing 600+ pages and many images, that can take a while…

That’s why I was asked lately if there was a way to modify the page numbers directly in the already proofed PDF document. I thought of doing it with Cocoa and Quartz by drawing over the page numbers, but unfortunately that is RGB only.

So if you have any idea or experience that would be awesome and much appreciated!

Best regards from Berlin

Martin:

Does the client really need to see it? Is there cross-page content that needs to be considered (even page folios - reordering with page numbers already in place would be a problem)?? Or is this something that can be done at the imposition stage (which would be trivial given the right circumstances)?

Cheers,
