Is there a way to add text to an image without Photoshop?
It seems like there should be a simple way to do this.
Sadly, it will require an image editor of some kind.
Gimp is free but not scriptable.

Other than that, I don’t know of any free options. If you have a lot of images to do, there are some inexpensive shareware solutions…

I did find ImageMagick, a command line image editor, which looks like it could work, but it looks really overwhelming. It would take me a while to figure out how to get it all working.
