Keyboard shortcuts

In OS 9, used to be able to add extra characters to end of a script that would enable a keyboard shortcut.
Like so: “myscript \cE” would enable Control E to activate the script.

I know in OS X we have the Keyboard Preference that enables setting shortcuts to scripts, but I haven’t been able to get it to work in QuarkXPress 6.5.
It seems like more trouble than the old method, anyhow.

Does anyone know if “the old method” works anymore, or am I just not doing it properly?

I don’t think the problem is related in any way to what you’re doing, AutoFetishist. Compared to what was possible in OS 9, customisation through System Preferences’ Keyboard Shortcuts seems rather limited (and, in some cases, possibly broken). In any case, there appears to be no built-in method for triggering scripts from custom key combinations in Mac OS X (much as I’d be delighted to be proved wrong on this).

It’s my hope that, in time, this situation will change. But in the meantime, you may have to resort to a third-party solution - of which there are a number of possibilities (many offering additional features) worth considering.

While by no means exhaustive, the following list may help to get you started:

I recommend Butler and Spark.
Butler also handles many other things, so be sure to check it out.

I would also recommend Spark.

BTW, Qwerty, I changed your Spark link; it now points to the English page (instead of French).

Another suggestion is Quicksilver:

The Triggers section lets you fire off scripts with user defined key commands, but there’s also a LOT more this thing does. Give it a try.

My personal choices are QuickSilver for triggering by name and FastScripts which makes key combos particularly easy.
