Has anyone done any thing with ODBC and AS?
How did you get on?
Looking to access/use a main database to do stuff.
I am better off using Filemaker?

I don’t think you want to use ODBC with applescript. But what database are you trying to talk to, what is the application? Since you’re even considering using Filemaker, it sounds like you’re putting the cart before the horse. What is it that you really want to do?
One of the great things about perl is that it allows access to different database tools using a common set of functions, and I believe it is ODBC that makes this possible.
I have had it in the back of my mind that a osax or background only scriptable application that provided an interface to ODBC might be a useful thing. But the usual story of lack of time and wondering if anybody would actually pay for such a tool has dulled my enthusiasm for such a project.

Then you haven’t tried setting up ODBC on the Mac. It’s easy enough on Windows but unforunately not so on the Mac. Go hang out in any of the database forums like http://www.entropy.ch/phpbb2/
It’s a disaster.
