Opening internet browser

If I want my AppleScript application to open up a web browser and go to a certain web page is it possible to have it open the default browser or do you have to specify the browser? My initial thought was that you would have to tell safari to open a certain web page but then I was thinking what if they downloaded firefox and use that as their default browser.

Is there anyway to set a referrer so on my google analytics account I can see how many people are being referred to my site via my program. I believe currently it is just logging them as a direct referral.
