Question about Applescript

Hello all,

I am very new to Applescript (but not to Macs - am designer - and consider myself a knowledgeable user), but plan to start learning. I appreciate many of the automated things that AS can do and I have used many scripts written by others. But… is it possible somehow to overcome (and thus create a script) this problem: (???)

I have a third party peice of downloading software and need to password-protect the preferences part of the program (ie. enter a password to be able to open and/or change the prefs). I am the owner of my home powerbook, but not the only user, and I wish to prevent anybody in my household from changing the prefs to enable them to download ‘adult’ content files, as currently, all it takes is unchecking an option in the prefs to be able to download ‘adult’ content, and I hope to make this impossible for the younger (or any) members of my family.

I presume however, that this would be more of a developers tools job!

Many thanks in advance.

You ask a completely general question, so I’ll give the general answer: No. Two reasons: unless you can write some fairly sophisticated code to watch that prefs file and set it back every time it’s changed (the author of the original application didn’t provide that facility), and second, there are lots of ways around even a good “watcher”.

ok thanks. - Thought as much!
