quote breaking command for terminal

i seem to be doing okay w/ issueing command line, but have run into a problem. here is what i have so far:

activate
tell application “Terminal”
activate
set ThisDate to display dialog “Which date?” default answer “Date”
set ThisDate to text returned of ThisDate as string
do script “cd /Users/Shugart/Desktop/my_flat_file” & “/” & ThisDate
do script “cd /Users/Shugart/Desktop/my_flat_file/” & ThisDate in window 1
do script “mv oddball.csv.” & ThisDate & " temp" in window 1
do script “cat temp | tr ‘r’ ‘n’ > oddball.csv.” & ThisDate in window 1

end tell

on error error_message
beep
display dialog error_message buttons {“Ok”} default button 1
end try

it works fine until i get to

do script “cat temp | tr ‘r’ ‘n’ > oddball.csv.” & ThisDate in window 1

when i check the syntax it splits the command.

	do script "cat temp | tr '

’ ’
’ > oddball.csv." & ThisDate in window 1

how can i preserve the command line to not break apart in applescript?

You need to escape the backslashes in the shell command. So

do script "cat temp | tr 'r' 'n' > oddball.csv." & ThisDate in window 1

should be

do script "cat temp | tr '\r' '\n' > oddball.csv." & ThisDate in window 1
