Script Editor opens instead of downloading in Safari

Interesting problem a friend is having. When trying to download something using Safari or even Internet Explorer more often than not the Apple script editor will start up and pop up on the screen. The download does not begin. In trying to trouble shoot the problem I installed a preference pane called More Internet. This allowed me to see the helper applications assigned to different file types. Apple Script was not assigned to any of them. What would cause the script editor to start? It’s almost as though it is awaiting some kind of instruction.
This all began after a clean install of Panther on his original Flat Panel.

Thank you in advance!

Jim

I’ve heard of a folk (but I can’t remember where) which had a similar problem. His script editor was launching under certain stupid circumstances. Most probably this is a strange behaviour introduced with SE 2 and its support for the protocol “applescript://”…
Have you tried deleting (keep a copy in another place) of your script editor or internetconfig preferences, then restarting?

I have not tried that but will. I shall post the results as soon as I can. Thank you for the suggestion.

Jim

I have finally had a chance to to try the 2 above items. This is what happened. First I deleted the internetconfig pref and restarted. No change. I moved scripteditor to the trash and restarted. First download worked liked normal next one did nothing. Since scripteditor could not start nothing happened. Safari opened a new window that stayed blank and no download. I did find out that all of his browsers do this so it seems to be connected to downloading files in general.
