Using QuickTime to add silence to an audio track (wav)?

Ideally, I’d want to specify the number of seconds of silence and then specify the point in the wav to add it to (all using quicktime and applescript).

One idea is to have a long .wav file, copy the amount of silence I want, and then paste it into the wav at the appropriate spot but this means I have to keep up with a separate wav file and also the maximum number of seconds of silence I can add is limited to the length of the wav file containing silence.

The quicktime api reference material on apple’s site has a function to add silence but I want to stick with applescript if possible. Perhaps if I can create a new quicktime movie file with an audio track, I can select any amount of silence to my heart’s content?
